TPC Wisconsin

Full course renovation  |   madison, Wisconsin

Formerly known as Cherokee Country Club, TPC Wisconsin underwent a comprehensive renovation to meet PGA TOUR and TPC Network standards while addressing long-standing infrastructure, drainage, and environmental challenges. The project required a complete re-envisioning of the course to support championship-level play, member enjoyment, and long-term sustainability.

design focus

Working in close collaboration with Steve Stricker, Steve Wenzloff played a key role in guiding the strategic and technical evolution of the golf course.

The redesign focused on:

   *  Regrading the course to accommodate advances in the modern game

   *  Rebuilding all greens, fairways, and major infrastructure systems

   *  Repositioning strategic features to improve playability and competitive balance

   *  Implementing a comprehensive drainage and cart path system

   *  Integrating extensive ecological restoration throughout the property

Environmental stewardship was a central component of the project, with more than 35 acres of degraded wetlands restored to improve water flow, habitat diversity, and overall site health. Boardwalks and clear-span bridges were incorporated to integrate ecological features with both the golf and spectator experience.

outcome & impact

The renovation elevated TPC Wisconsin to full PGA TOUR standards, delivering a course that is both a fair test for players of all skill levels and a memorable experience from tee to green.  The project successfully balanced competitive golf, environmental responsibility, and long-term durability, positioning TPC Wisconsin as a premier championship venue and year-round member destination.

The renovation was recognized as Golf Inc. Magazine’s 2024 Renovation of the Year, reflecting its impact within the industry.

TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm

comprehensive course renovation  |   Potomac, Maryland

Following the conclusion of the Booz Allen Classic in 2006, TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm underwent a sweeping renovation to modernize the course and restore its competitive integrity as a PGA TOUR venue.

Years of tournament play had exposed both strategic and environmental challenges, most notably severe erosion and flooding along Rock Run Stream Valley — a primary tributary of the Potomac River. The renovation presented an opportunity to re-envision the course from both a championship and sustainability perspective.

design focus

Steve Wenzloff played a central role in guiding the comprehensive renovation, which addressed infrastructure, strategy, and environmental restoration across the entire property.

Key elements of the work included:

   *  Restoration of more than 7,000 linear feet of stream and eroded stream banks to stabilize water flow and enhance course character

   *  Installation of a new irrigation and drainage system to support long-term turf performance

   *  Rebuilding all greens, tees, and fairways with Bentgrass and recontouring green complexes

   *  Repositioning and reshaping bunkers to reflect Mid-Atlantic design character, with select Scottish-influenced features

   *  Regrading all holes and narrowing fairways to enhance strategic demands

The renovation also dramatically restructured the routing, converting multiple holes to new pars and configurations to strengthen the course’s competitive balance.

outcome & impact

The completed renovation transformed TPC Potomac into a par-70 championship test measuring 7,124 yards, a course capable of hosting elite professional competition while delivering a refined daily-play experience for members.

Environmental restoration improved site stability and visual cohesion, while lowered spectator mounding created more natural sightlines and improved viewing across multiple holes during tournament play.

Following the renovation, scoring conditions tightened significantly, reinforcing the course’s reputation as a demanding and strategically nuanced test. PGA TOUR professionals have consistently praised the layout for rewarding precision, patience, and disciplined iron play.

   *  Ongoing refinements ahead of the Travelers Championship, including new retaining structures and bunker style updates

Throughout the process, the focus remained on maintaining predictable playing conditions while preserving the course’s traditional character.

outcome & impact

The renovations refreshed the visual presentation of TPC River Highlands while reinforcing its strategic foundations. Improvements to bunkering, drainage, and greens have enhanced consistency across playing conditions for players of all skill levels.

Sedgefield Country Club

Short Game Practice Facility  |   greensboro, north carolina

Sedgefield Country Club identified a need to significantly expand and modernize its short-game practice facilities to better serve members, junior programs, and PGA TOUR professionals during the Wyndham Championship. The existing facility was limited in size and functionality, restricting both capacity and variety of practice conditions.

The objective was to create a facility that functioned at a championship level while remaining highly usable for daily member play.

design focus

Steve Wenzloff led the design of a new two-acre short-game practice facility, expanding usable short-grass area by nearly five times while closely reflecting the character of Sedgefield’s existing greens.

The design emphasized:

   *  Mirroring on-course green contours and slope characteristics

   *  Providing a wide range of bunker shot scenarios, including greenside and 30–40 yard shots

   *  Supporting simultaneous use by TOUR professionals, members, and junior players

   *  Integrating the facility into tournament operations and spectator flow

ShotLink data was utilized to review and align design elements with Sedgefield’s existing green complexes, ensuring consistency between practice conditions and on-course play.

outcome & impact

The completed facility features two Ultradwarf Bermuda greens, three strategically placed bunkers, and approximately 15,000 square feet of closely mown short-grass practice area.

The expanded space accommodates a dozen or more players simultaneously and serves as a key entry and gathering area during the Wyndham Championship — delivering value to PGA TOUR professionals one week each year and Sedgefield members the remaining 51 weeks.

The facility has been widely praised by players and tournament leadership for its versatility, realism, and usability.

quote

“The new short-game area will be a huge upgrade for the Tour pros one week a year and for the Sedgefield members 51 weeks a year.”

TPC Sawgrass

practice facility modifications  |   ponte vedra beach, Florida

As the home of  THE PLAYERS, TPC Sawgrass demands practice facilities that meet the same exacting standards as the Stadium Course itself. In 2016, the practice facility underwent a comprehensive renovation to better support PGA TOUR professionals as well as resort guests.

The goal was not expansion for its own sake, but precision — creating practice environments where players could prepare with complete confidence in how the golf ball would perform.

design focus

Steve Wenzloff guided the overhaul of the practice facility with an emphasis on surface quality, shot response, and professional-level functionality.

Key elements of the renovation included:

   *  Expansion of turf areas by approximately 35 percent to improve capacity and versatility

   *  Construction of two USGA-spec greens and two Sandbelt-style greens to provide varied playing conditions

   *  Addition of multiple target greens to support a wide range of practice scenarios

   *  Complete redesign of the TOUR-professionals-only practice area, including two large putting greens, one undulating and one flat, and a dedicated chipping area

All practice greens were designed and maintained to perform like on-course greens, allowing players to evaluate shot shape, trajectory, and distance control with confidence.

outcome & impact

The renovated practice facility reinforced TPC Sawgrass as the benchmark for championship preparation. PGA TOUR professionals benefit from practice conditions that respond precisely to the shots they hit, closely replicating competitive play.

By prioritizing surface integrity and functional realism, the facility supports elite performance while preserving the disciplined preparation standards expected at the TOUR’s flagship venue.

quote

“They’re going to be maintained like greens on the course, rather than having a piece of turf with a flagstick in it. They need to know how the ball is going to perform.”
